The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. (IEEE) was founded in 1884 with a mission to foster technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.
Among the early charter members were - Thomas Edison, Elihu Thomson, Alexander Graham Bell, Charles Proteus Steinmetz, Robert H. Marriott, Lee De Forest, Frederick E. Terman, William R. Hewlett, Ernst Weber and Ivan Getting.
Today, IEEE is the world's largest technical and professional society. It serves over 80,000 student members among about 395,000 members in over 160 countries.
